Now Hiring an Events Coordinator

Deadline to apply - Sunday, May 20

Job Description

Left Bank Books is seeking an energetic, outgoing, detail-oriented avid reader to coordinate our more than 200 events per year. This is a full-time job requiring a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as needed to manage events.

What we’re looking for:

Experience – The ideal candidate will have experience with coordinating author events, producing theater or music or some other relevant experience

Commitment - The ideal Left Bank Books Event Coordinator would be open to a 3 to 5 year commitment.

A positive outlook -  We want you to enjoy your job and be enjoyable on your job.

An outgoing and energetic personality -  We love introverts, but wrangling authors, publicists, customers, staff and event partners requires you to be energized by talking to people.

Detail oriented organizational skills -  There are a lot of moving parts to this job.  The details are crucial.

Financial literacy – Our events are a large part of our business model. Not every event is profitable – and some aren’t meant to be – but you must be able to work within a tight budget and generate as much income per event as possible.

Someone who knows St. Louis and is conversant with all the communities Left Bank Books serves – St. Louis is a diverse community with a lot of different interests and needs. You’ll need to be able to talk to poets, corporate partners, activists and artists with equal comfort.

Someone who is conversant with “shop local” philosophy and with independent bookstores as the preferred source for books and book culture (as opposed to Amazon.)

Proficiency in MS Office – Excel in particular -  and various social platforms.  Bonus points for Adobe Photoshop.

Ablity to work with and coordinate a team – We have a staff of 17 people ready to work our events and many community partners. You’ll need to maintain efficient and effective communication with all of them.

Ability to work closely with and take direction from the bookstore owner -  You’ll work closely with Kris and Jay to present the caliber of events we’ve cultivated over the years. The standards are high.

Willingness to lug books around and set up (with help) the store for events.

Ability and willingness to travel to the occasional booksellers conference

Other skills:

Excellent speaking and writing skills

Bookstore experience

Overview of job:

Left Bank Books’ Event Coordinator is responsible for coordinating over 200 events a year, including Independent Bookstore Day, Small Business Saturday, and Bookfest St. Louis. Some events are collaborations with other organizations, most are generated by us. Some are single authors, some are panels.  The LBB Event Coordinator communicates with publishers’ publicists, authors and authors’ agents, and local event partners to flesh out the details of events and coordinates with LBB’s Co-owners, Marketing and Publicity Manager, Event Buyer, and Event Host, to plan and execute a successful event.  A successful event is usually an event that draws the anticipated crowd and sells more than enough books to turn a profit.  There are often other markers that applied to the assessment of the event’s success, such as reaching underserved communities, providing books, programming or fundraising for a nonprofit, addressing an important issue, networking with an important organization. The Event Coordinator works with the store owners and the Children’s Buyer to write and pitch event proposals. The Event Coordinator is responsible for venue relations, for creative collaborations, and for tracking the events results in terms of attendance, books sold, event costs, etc.

Everyone who works at Left Bank Books is first and foremost, a bookseller, and the Event Coordinator is expected to serve customers in the store and on the phone when needed.
