Manhattan Beach: A Novel By Jennifer Egan Cover Image
ISBN: 9781476716732
Availability: Special Order
Published: Scribner - October 3rd, 2017

The Left Bank Book Box, October 2017

With incredibly well-developed characters and an absorbing story that often reads like a thriller, Manhattan Beach is amazingly beautiful. Anna works in the Brooklyn Naval Yard as a diver during WWII. She’s lost her father, and as she becomes entangled with Dexter, a club owner, her mother decides to move back to the Midwest leaving her to live alone. Not something a woman did in the 1940’s. She is fiercely independent and is one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time!

Yes, this is a war story. And yes, this is a gangster story. And yes, this is a love story. And yes, in the wrong hands, you would be right in thinking this is going to be saccharine and destined for Lifetime’s movie of the week. But Jennifer Egan is one of today’s greatest writers. The prose is phenomenal and the characters are alive and become more and more a part of your life the deeper into it you go. I loved Manhattan Beach and I know you will too! - randy

Published: Riverhead Books - August 29th, 2017

The Left Bank Book Box, September 2017

Very rarely have I ever found myself reading a 400 page book in two sittings, but once I started reading "My Absolute Darling," I could barely bring myself to put it down. This novel is alive in every sense of the word, from the deceivingly simple yet elegant prose, to the harrowing internal life of 14-year-old Turtle Alveston, to the vibrant descriptions of the Northern California wilderness. Every time I expected the plot to go a certain way, Gabriel Tallent found a road I hadn't even imagined, much less traveled. You don't just root for Turtle's survival, you yearn for it, ache for it, hurt with her hurts and triumph in her triumphs. This isn't a book you just read; it's one you feel.  - Lauren

Thoroughly Southern in every way. I wanted to run around drinking a mint julep and calling everyone darlin'. This book is a perfectly balanced with drama, humor, compassion, and depth. It is a family drama with so much drama that you have to laugh at points. And laugh you will! Almost Sisters is an homage to the South that doesn't gloss over anything. Jackson makes you feel like you are an "almost sister" as well. - Shane

The Leavers has stayed with me in a wonderful way since I finished reading, as it speaks to the importance of understanding in today’s society. The characters all struggle with finding and coping with their place in the world, from a Chinese-immigrant mother who disappears from her son’s life, to the son’s life with his adopted parents, affluent white professors at a liberal arts college in upstate New York. It was the winner of the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, appeared on numerous Most Anticipated lists, and received raves from the likes of Barbara Kingsolver and Ann Patchett. You should believe the hype. - Shane

Exit West: A Novel By Mohsin Hamid Cover Image
ISBN: 9780735212176
Availability: Ships quickly (1-7 days)
Published: Riverhead Books - March 7th, 2017

The Left Bank Book Box, March 2017

Mohsin Hamid possesses the rare talent of being able to tell a deeply interesting story that is at once a novel of ideas and a love story with fully realized characters.  Saeed and Nadia are Millennials: 21st century professionals with aspirations and the capacity for having fun. They like to listen to music and sometimes smoke a joint or two.  They just happen to live in an unnamed country where violence from militant extremists makes both impossible. In a light-handed stroke of metaphoric genius that draws from magic realism, Hamid creates a series of doors through which Saeed and Nadia pass, becoming refugees in search of the life that was violently stolen from them. This is a love story for our times, ripped from the headlines, one that you'll curl up with and devour, but also one that sticks with you for some time to come. It is one of my favorite books of the spring. - Kris

A Piece of the World: A Novel By Christina Baker Kline Cover Image
ISBN: 9780062356260
Availability: Special Order
Published: William Morrow - February 21st, 2017

The Left Bank Book Box, February 2017

Inspired by the true story behind the subject of Andrew Wyeth’s iconic painting Christina’s World (1948), we get to see a picture of mid-century Americana in all of its beauty. Christina (the main character of the novel) is a powerful character, crippled by a childhood illness, who refuses to give up and lives her life as well as she can. As readers, we can see that Christina struggles with how much she needs the family farm and lifestyle, and how much it needs her.
I was most keen to the author’s appreciation for the lack of amenities and the resourcefulness of the family. It definitely made me want to get away from the world, shut off the internet, ignore the cars driving by, light a candle and wrap up in a blanket and just read. I had dinner with Christina Baker Kline in Minneapolis, and she discussed her new novel A Piece of the World. She is a bundle of energy. Her enthusiasm for this book is unbridled. She immediately gained a fan in me. I don’t always read historical fiction, but when I do, I love it. This book is no exception. - Shane

Such an engrossing read. Fifteen year old Linda forms a strong bond with Paul and his mother Patra as they hurdle towards a family tragedy. Set in the northern woods of Minnesota, Linda is navigating the world on her own and is marked for life by the choices she makes as well as the choices of others. A great debut novel! - randy
