About our Speakers

Rev. Dr. Leah Gunning Francis is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Christian Theological Seminary and the author of Ferguson and Faith: Sparking Leadership and Awakening Community. A scholar-activist, she has been featured on numerous podcasts and in the PBS Documentary The Talk: Race in America and the 2021 Sundance film Ferguson Rises: A Racial Healing Documentary. As a Black mother of two sons, she has grounded her scholarship and activism in an ethic of love that honors the humanity of young black men in a society that too often has little regard for them.

Rev. Dr. Karen Denise Anderson is first and foremost a follower and disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. She continues to be amazed and humbled that God called her to pastoral ministry. She has a deep love for God and God’s people. After serving three congregations in St. Louis, in 2019, Bishop Clement W. Fugh, assigned her to First AME (FAME) Church in Las Vegas, NV. She is their first female senior pastor. A passionate champion for children, Rev. Anderson was actively involved in Metropolitan Churches United (MCU) break the school-to-prison pipeline efforts.

Rev. Mike Kinman (he/him) is a follower of Jesus, spouse, parent, Episcopal priest, and the Tenth Rector of All Saints Church, Pasadena.  As the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis (2009-2016) Mike had a particular interest in the Cathedral’s role in dismantling systemic misogyny and homophobia and promoting racial and economic reconciliation in St. Louis — and with Christ Church Cathedral was active in the new civil rights movement that was ignited in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri. He also serves on the Global Advisory Council of Thistle Farms.

Rev. Traci Blackmon is the Associate General Minister of Justice & Local Church Ministries for The United Church of Christ and was the first female pastor of Christ the King UCC church in Florissant, MO. A featured voice with many regional, national, and international media outlets and a frequent contributor to print publications, Rev. Blackmon’s communal leadership and work in the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown, Jr., in Ferguson, MO has gained her both national and international recognition and audiences from the White House to the Carter Center to the Vatican.

Rev. Shaun Ellison Jones, pastor of Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ossining, NY, has been described as a young, powerful and prophetic voice with a heart for social justice and bridging generations. He is a pastor, community organizer and gifted workshop facilitator with 20 years of ministry experience. He has been blessed to serve in pastoral ministry, on denomination staff and as a social justice advocate as a community organizer.   He is Co-Chair for My Brother’s Keeper Ossining and a clergy leader for Community Voices Heard, and a board member of the Interfaith Council for Action housing Network. Rev. Jones is a native of St. Louis, MO.

Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson is president & CEO of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) and CDF Action Council. From 2011 through 2020, Rev. Wilson was president & CEO of Deaconess Foundation, a faith-based philanthropy for child well-being and racial justice in St. Louis.  Under his leadership, the foundation established the Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being, a community action tank engaging thousands of citizens annually.  Dr. Wilson also pastored Saint John’s Church in St. Louis After the police killing of Michael Brown, Jr., the church hosted the #BlackLivesMatter Freedom Ride to and other mobilizations.

About Faith After Ferguson: Resilient Leadership in Pursuit of Racial Justice

Learn from the courageous and resilient leaders on the front lines for justice and discover new ways of leading in the movement for racial justice.

Leah Gunning Francis (Ferguson and Faith, 2015) revisits the clergy and activists at the front lines of the Ferguson, MO, Black Lives Matter protests, to hear what they've learned in the struggle for justice and healing five years later. Weaving personal accounts of these activists and clergy with her own journey of activism over the past five years, Francis offers new insights on faith-filled living in response to social injustice, and shares lessons for organizing and mobilizing people to effect real change. The wisdom that emerges out of the stories in each chapter challenge us to awaken all of our senses and equip us to join God's transformative work of racial justice.

Francis also reflects on the traumatic impact of the four years under the Trump administration and the more recent events of racism and white supremacy showcased in the murder of George Floyd, the presidential election, and the Capitol riots in January 2021.
