Left Bank Books presents longtime St. Louisian and journalist, Jim Merkel, who will sign and discuss his new book Growing Up In St. Louis.
A new book takes a different view of life’s first years, and how they’re lived in St. Louis. In Growing Up St. Louis, Author Jim Merkel tells the stories of more than 100 people he interviewed from every background and age about their growing up years. The only thing they had in common was that they grew up in St. Louis. For the book, Merkel spent more than two years interviewing blacks and whites, rich and poor, with memories sad and happy. He also wrote 10 essays about how events of different times affected kids, from 1900 to the present
Jim Merkel grew up in St. Louis where he watched the progress of construction on the Gateway Arch with his father in the 1960s. He is the author of The Colorful Characters of St. Louis, Hoosiers and Scrubby Dutch: St. Louis's South Side, and Beer, Brats, and Baseball: German-Americans in St. Louis. He has appeared on KWMU, KDHX, and Fox 2's News in the Morning, among other programs. For more information, visit www.jimmerkelthewriter.com.
