Dark Stars, edited by John F.D. Taff, is a tribute to horror's longstanding short fiction legacy, featuring 12 terrifying original stories from today's most noteworthy authors.

Within these pages you'll find tales of dead men walking, an insidious secret summer fling, an island harboring unspeakable power, and a dark hallway that beckons. You'll encounter terrible monsters--both human and supernatural--and be forever changed. The stories in Dark Stars run the gamut from traditional to modern, from dark fantasy to neo-noir, from explorations of beloved horror tropes to the unknown--possibly unknowable--threats.

It's all in here because it's all out there, now, in horror.

Dark Stars features all-new stories from the following award-winning authors and up-and-coming voices: Chesya Burke, Ramsey Campbell, Gemma Files, Stephen Graham Jones, Alma Katsu, Caroline Kepnes, John Langan, Livia Llewellyn, Josh Malerman, Usman T. Malik, Priya Sharma, and John F.D. Taff.

Created as an homage to the 1980 classic horror anthology Dark Forces, edited by Kirby McCauley, Dark Stars also features an introduction by Josh Malerman and an afterword from original contributor Ramsey Campbell--a poignant finale to this bone-chilling collection.

John F.D. Taff is a Bram Stoker Award short-listed horror and dark fiction author with more than 25 years experience, and more than 100 short stories and seven novels in print. He has appeared in Cemetery Dance, Eldritch Tales, Unnerving, Deathrealm, Big Pulp and One Buck Horror. Recent anthology contributions include The Seven Deadliest and I Can Hear the Shadows. Taff's novella collection, The End in All Beginnings, was called one of the best novella collections by Jack Ketchum and was a Stoker Award Finalist.

Josh Malerman is a New York Times bestselling author and one of two singer-songwriters for the rock band The High Strung. His debut novel, Bird Box, is the inspiration for the hit Netflix film of the same name. His other novels include Unbury CarolInspectionA House at the Bottom of a Lake, and Malorie, the sequel to Bird Box. Malerman lives in Michigan with his fiancée, the artist-musician Allison Laakko.

Caroline Kepnes is the New York Times bestselling author of You, Hidden Bodies, Providence and You Love Me. Her work has been translated into a multitude of languages and inspired a television series adaptation of You, currently on Netflix. Kepnes graduated from Brown University and then worked as a pop culture journalist for Entertainment Weekly and a TV writer for 7th Heaven and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She grew up in Cape Cod, and now lives in Los Angeles.

About 12 Little Elves Visit Missouri

'Twas Christmas in Missouri,
and 12 elves were sent
to see who was sleeping . . .
Away the elves went!

Twelve charming elves travel throughout Missouri to see who is still awake before Santa comes. Along the way, they visit iconic landmarks and curiosities, all bedecked in holly and holiday fun. From Kansas City Plaza to the Promised Land Zoo to Kister Park and more, these little elves take in the lights at the Missouri Botanical Garden Glow, race down the cobblestone streets of St. Charles, watch a show in Branson, and ride carriages in Sainte Genevieve. Their last stop? Your home, of course. Jump in bed!

Independent Bookstore Day at Left Bank Books

Saturday, April 24
In-store Browsing 10am-6pm
Online 12am-11:59pm

Left Bank Books is thrilled to announce our long-awaited
Reopening to In-store Browsing,
beginning during our
Independent Bookstore Day Celebration
on Saturday, April 24.

That day, the community is invited to participate in in-store and online special promotions, activities for children and teens, opportunities to purchase exclusive Independent Bookstore Day merchandise, and an evening online poetry event. In-store browsing will be open from 10am to 6pm.

Left Bank Books closed to in-store browsing last March at the same time as much of the country did to protect the community during the pandemic. Out of necessity, our business model shifted to online and phone sales and we were grateful to receive massive support from our customers during this uncertain time. It is thanks to our community that we are here now and able to welcome people inside again starting April 24.

We will reopen to browsing with significant policies in place to continue protecting public health. Customers will be asked to remain correctly masked at all times while inside, to use hand sanitizer upon entering and frequently during their visit, and to maintain 6 feet social distancing from others. Additionally, we will limit customer in-store occupancy to a maximum of 15 people at a time. We will provide clear signage and markings on the ground to help visitors understand how to safely enter and exit and maintain social distance both inside and outside while awaiting entrance.

Activities planned for the Independent Bookstore Day celebration and reopening include:
  • an outside Dance Party Storytime with Cliff at 10:30am,
  • an outdoor Young Adult Open Mic at 1pm, and
  • a virtual Independent Bookstore Day/National Poetry Month Celebration event with area poets on our Facebook Live at 7pm.
  • Throughout the day, customers can also enter for a chance to win a $15 LBB Gift Certificate! Simply follow these steps:
    • Shop in person at Left Bank Books on April 24;
    • Take a selfie with your Left Bank purchase in front of our Independent Bookstore Day window;
    • Post your pic on Instagram on April 24 and tag #IBDLBBSTL and @leftbankbooks.
    • Winners will be selected randomly and notified on Monday, April 26.
Special promotions for that day only include:
  • free shipping on online orders when you spend $75 or more (from midnight to midnight);
  • a free tote bag when you spend $50 or more in person inside the store; and
  • a free "blind date with a book" when a minimum $5 donation is made in person to the Left Bank Books Foundation nonprofit (all while supplies last).
  • Exclusive Independent Bookstore Day merchandise will be available only for in-store purchase starting at 10am on April 24. Items not sold out will become available for purchase online after 6pm. Quantities are limited and first come, first served. No holds or pre-orders are possible.

Left Bank Books Co-owner Kris Kleindienst is very excited to reopen to the public, "We are thrilled to open our doors to the community we have so missed. The generous support and the understanding we received as we navigated uncharted territory last year sustained us. We have great books and gifts and can't wait to share them with our friends in person!"

Curbside pickup, shipping, and home delivery will all remain available when the store reopens. Customers will still be able to order online and by phone. After April 24, in-store browsing will remain available Mondays through Thursdays, from 10am to 6pm; Fridays and Saturdays, from 10am to 8pm; and Sundays, 11am to 6pm.

Left Bank Books' Facebook Page

Left Bank Books is very excited to announce another Virtual Celebrity Storytime! We welcome author/illustrator Jessie Sima, who will read aloud her new picture book, Jules vs. the Ocean, on Facebook Live at 11am CST on June 18. Join us on our Facebook Page and order a copy of Jules vs. the Ocean from Left Bank Books to support authors and independent bookstores!

From the creator of Not Quite Narwhal comes a story about a young girl determined to impress her older sister by building elaborate sandcastles, even if that means standing up to the ocean and its smash-happy waves!

Jules is going to build the biggest, the fanciest, and the most excellent sandcastle. Her sister will be so impressed.

But the ocean has other plans.

Jules keeps building bigger, fancier, and more excellent castles, and waves keep smashing them.

And when the ocean takes her bucket, that is the final straw.

Jules is going to take a stand!

From beloved storyteller Jessie Sima comes the tongue-in-cheek story of the sand, the sea, and sisterhood—told with her signature warmth, timeless humor, and delightfully playful illustrations.

"The clear, natural-sounding text reads aloud well, and large-type words and capitalization indicate which words to emphasize. In the digital artwork, the rounded lines and harmonious colors set a pleasing tone while depicting the characters expressively. This sunny picture book recreates a child’s memorable encounter with nature." Booklist

Jessie Sima is an author/illustrator living and working in New York City. She grew up in a small town in southern New Jersey, unaware that she was a storyteller. Once she figured it out, she told her family and friends. They took it quite well. They All Saw a Cat meets The Important Book in this sensitive and impactful picture book about seeing the world from different points of view by Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honoree Christian Robinson.

In this full, bright, and beautiful picture book, many different perspectives around the world are deftly and empathetically explored—from a pair of bird-watchers to the pigeons they’re feeding. Young readers will be drawn into the luminous illustrations inviting them to engage with the world in a new way and see how everyone is connected, and that everyone matters.

"Simple and heartfelt, the refrain of Caldecott Honoree Robinson’s poem speaks directly to readers: “You matter." By seeing all life as intertwined—ancient and new, minuscule and gargantuan...Robinson represents life as both interconnected and precious. It’s a profound thought expressed with singular focus and eloquence." - Publishers Weekly, starred review

Christian Robinson was born in Hollywood, California. He grew up in a small one-bedroom apartment with his brother, two cousins, aunt, and grandmother. Drawing became a way to make space for himself and to create the kind of world he wanted to see. He studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts and would later work with the Sesame Workshop and Pixar Animation Studios before becoming an illustrator of books for children. His books include Gaston and Antoinette, written by Kelly DiPucchio, and the #1 New York Times bestseller Last Stop on Market Street, written by Matt de la Peña, which was awarded a Caldecott Honor, a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, and the Newbery Medal. He presently lives in northern California with his rescue greyhound Baldwin and several houseplants. He looks forward to one day seeing the aurora borealis. Visit him online at TheArtofFun.com.
