I wanted to hold a grudge against the author of this book. After all, she is epically imperfect, impulsive and sometimes painfully self-absorbed. And then I didn’t. Instead I recognized her story for what it was – a hilarious, painful, sometimes ugly, sometimes breathtakingly beautiful journey out of soul crushing grief and into what will become adulthood. She tells her story leaving in the brutal mistakes, such as singlehandedly destroying her marriage after her mother’s death, then skating to the edge of a descent into heroin addiction. She also leaves in the brutally funny miscalculations such as hiking for three months in shoes that are one size too small (and losing several toenails as a result) carrying a backpack that weighs approximately as much as a bus. I’ll hate it again when it becomes a bestseller and is made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon, but for now, I’m going to hand-sell it like crazy. I recommend for people who liked Unbroken and Eat Pray Love (although this one isn't touchy feely like epl). If you want a preview of this author’s voice, check out her “Dear Sugar” column here: http://therumpus.net/sections/dear-sugar

“The inspiring story of Strayed's solo journey on the Pacific Crest Trail snags you from the beginning and keeps you engaged the whole way through. It was a bold move considering that she had no backpacking experience prior to her trip, but in the years following her mother's death and the subsequent dissolution of her family, Strayed was no stranger to bold moves. The challenges, both external and internal, that she endures while on the trail are balanced with stories about her life leading up to her brave decision to hike alone for months in the rugged Western wilderness. This is a story of survival in every sense of the word, and one that will stick with you long after you finish reading.”
