The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (The Inheritance Trilogy #1) (Paperback)
Staff Reviews
If you want a kick-ass female protagonist in a sensual, magical setting, read this book. Yeine is from a culture of warrior women but she has to step down as ruler of her supposedly barbarian realm when she is summoned as one of the potential heirs to the leader of the entire world. But life in Sky--a palace located, you guessed it, in the sky--presents more dangers than Yeine has ever faced before, both within the walls and within herself. Sky is an incredible book setting. It's a place where exiled gods are slaves and aristrocratic death plots reach new levels. It's also incredibly sexy. (Hint: If you think Fifty Shades of Grey sounds exciting, I can promise it's nothing compared to a sex scene in this book that is quite literally out of this world.) N.K. Jemisin's world-building is expertly done, and her gods remind me of the jealous, sensual beings from Greek mythology... only much more dangerous. And you'll cheer for Yeine as she becomes the person she was meant to be and then some in this adventure.
— DanielleYeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.
With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate -- and gods and mortals -- are bound inseparably together.

"Many books are good, some are great, but few are truly important. Add to this last category The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N.K. Jemisin's debut novel... This is the must-read fantasy of the year."—Booklist
