This year’s Left Bank Books Angel Tree is collecting books for English language learners in Saint Louis Public Schools!
Saint Louis Public Schools enrolls more than 2,600 English language learners who collectively speak more than fifty languages. The Bilingual Parent Library is one of the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program components. Located in the district’s ESOL Office, the bilingual library collection includes more than 500 titles of books and dictionaries in multiple languages. There are five copies of each title. The library offers English language learners and parents an opportunity to have access to books in their first language, to promote literacy in their first language, and to encourage literacy experiences at home.
This year, the district adopted the Seal of Biliteracy, an award that recognizes graduating seniors for their proficiency in English and in at least one other world language. In addition, the district is also implementing Pathways Toward Biliteracy awards to recognize students in transitional grade levels (pre-kindergarten to kindergarten, 5th to 6th, 8th to 9th) for learning English and at least one other world language. The Bilingual Parent Library is one of the strategies used to support biliteracy experiences of district students—English language learners, in particular.
Currently, the library includes books in six languages: Arabic, Nepali, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, and Vietnamese. Adding books in English will help expand literacy experiences for English language learners in Saint Louis Public Schools.
You can help these students expand their understanding of the English language and appreciation for books as a way to continue to strengthen students' literacy in English simply by buying a book for donation today. Below are a list of titles we are seeking. Five copies are needed of each. To donate online, simply place your order as usual, select "I would like to pick this order up at the store," and in the order comments, mention that this book is an Angel Tree donation.
