This is one of my favorite books of all time! Ward masterfully weaves together a black ghost story, the black south, and the complex relationships all families share. Her imagery is both dark and whimsical, with characters that are both endearing and devastating. This story, at its heart, is one of true survival.
This is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It reads as if the characters are in conversation with the reader, which I loved. The Hawaiian mythology and history drives the narrative, pushing each character to act in completely different, but ultimately related ways. I couldn't put this book down!
