Getting Books Into the Hands of Public School Students

The Left Bank Books River City Readers Program seeks to increase literacy and promote a love of reading by sponsoring classrooms in the St. Louis Public Schools. Students in sponsored classrooms receive new books for their personal library every other month, and meet with authors throughout the school year.

Left Bank Books also brings authors to River City Readers classrooms so that students can meet them, In our first year, students had the opportunity to meet Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley, bestselling author Anthony Horowitz, and Broadway star LaChanze. This year we have also hosted author visits with authors such as Rob Scotton, author of Scaredy Cat Splat, and Allen Kurzweil, author of Potato Chip Science. Every student gets the chance to meet at least one author, if not more, who can pass on their love of reading and writing.

Thanks to the generocity of River City Readers sponsors, we have been able to double the number of students we sponsor in the St. Louis Public Schools every year since we began! This summer we hope to raise $20,000 so that we can again double the number of students we bring books to next fall. To help us reach our goal, become a River City Readers sponsor today!
