Poetry Picks

April is National Poetry Month. It is a strange and surreal month of weather and springtime struggle making the perfect background to the bursts of rhythm and words that give poetry its undefinable presence and occasional allure. Here you will find the poetry that inspires and engages the staff of Left Bank Books. There are selections for the poetry-phobic, lovers of poets and lovers of poetry (not always the same thing, yes?)We hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

"Clearing
at Dawn

The
fields are chill, the sparse rain has stopped; The colours of
Spring teem on every side. With leaping fish the blue pond is
full; With singing thrushes the green boughs droop. The flowers
of the field have dabbled their powdered cheeks; The mountain
grasses are bent level at the waist.By the bamboo stream the last
fragment of cloudBlown by the wind slowly scatters away."Recommended by Jonesey

Simple and unnervingly charming. Some of it's even about love--yet none of it makes me want to throw up, and most of it makes me smile.

There are people who have such exuberance for living that they carry the whole universe in them. When these universe bearers also have a sublime mastery of language, they become poets. Whitman is the ultimate poet in this sense, and in spite excessive exclamation marks and almost maddening cocksuredness (or perhaps because of them) his written universe is one of the only that unfailingly brings me to tears.

This is an excellent introduction for youngsters to one of the most well-known American poems. The lines are divided up, one or two on a page, to make the whole easy to digest. The great detail and realism of the illustrations recall the New England winters of Currier and Ives. They also serve to further explain the lines, making the book a lovely lesson in poetry interpretation. A particularly nice extra is the multi-layered vellum-coated cover.Recommended by Sarah.
