Ms. Smith's First and Second Graders

First and Second Graders Meet LaChanzeMs. Smith's 25 first and second graders at Washington Montessori Elementary receive a new book for their personal libraries every other month through our River City Readers program. They also get to meet authors brought to their school by Left Bank Books. Last year they met author and broadway-star, LaChanze, when she toured for her new picture book. Ms. Smith says, “The storytelling was the absolute best.  Once again I would like to thank you for giving our students the opportunity to meet with the author and Broadway star, LaChanze.  The students were very excited and couldn’t stop humming and singing the show tune that went with the book."Scaredy Cat Splat

This year, Ms. Smith's students also had the opportunity to meet picture book author Rob Scotten, who discussed his newest book, Scaredy Cat Splat. Author events like these give students a chance to meet authors who will not only encourage them to read and write, but also to show them that authors are real people who used to be children -- just like themselves!

September's Pick! It's Halloween, and Splat is determined to be the scariest cat in the class. Unfortunately he's just too much of a scaredy-cat himself. He's afraid of a little spider, and everyone says his costume looks more silly than scary. And when Mrs. Wimpydimple tells a ghost story in the dark, Splat gets so frightened that he tips over his jack-o'-lantern. But when the lights go back on, the entire class is scared silly by a small, black, furry creature with a big pumpkin head. "Whooooo" can it be?
