I would recommend this book to feminists, mothers, persons who love their mothers, genealogists, genealogy hobbyists, enthusiasts of local histories, family histories, oral histories, presidential histories, and American history...and, well, anyone who enjoys a good non-fiction read.

Janny Scott's prose is loving and thorough, carving out a space in history for a complex woman who, unfortunately, didn't live long enough to witness it.

Even if you've never read any of Vonnegut's work, the author has had an incredible impact and influence on you. Don't believe me? Read A Man Without a Country. A collection of essays, political tangents, and general rantings of a crotchety old man that are easy to nod along to. Here, KV is like cantankerous grandfather you love to agree with.

In the 90s, I toted my copy of 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth everywhere I went, like it was my Bible. The book was informative without being confusing, projects were fun, the consevation tips and techniques were effective and it all made me feel like a productive member of my community that was taking care of my planet. I am so happy and excited that EarthWorks has decided to release an updated version of my childhood treasure. The inside includes updated information on climate change, introductions to eating locally and composting, and tons of other tips and projects that encourage greener living. And most of all, it's informative and fun! Onward, young citizens and activists!

The very first monologue, "Let Me In," made me cry. By the time I got to "A Teenage Girl's Guide to Surviving Sex Slavery," on page 97, I felt guilty for crying earlier over something relatively innocuous. That's kind of the point, though: all pain hurts. Some is more heinous, some more tragic, but all of it is a largely unnecessary part of girls' lives. I Am an Emotional Creature is a celebration of girls' strength and a moving glimpse into their lives. It is a must-read for women of all ages.

The apocalyptic result of implementing utopian ideals, Slapstick is the grotesque tale of the last President of the United States of America. After creating the cure for loneliness, Dr. Wilber Daffodil-11 Swain watches Western civilization collapse while he languishes for the company of his dear twin sister, who died in a mental institution. Absurd and surreal, Slapstick addresses the human tragedy of loneliness, plays with social theory, strips down government, and asks very tough questions of human nature, love and common decency. Challenging and disjointed at times, it’s hard to find others who love the book as much as I do. Even some of the most rabid and enthusiastic Vonnegut readers would place this in a lesser stack. My grandmother often says, “Oh, Jenn. You just like to be different.” Maybe this is a case of that. Regardless, Slapstick remains the most worn binding on my shelf. P.S. Please promise me -- for the love of all that is good in this world-- you will never, never see the film version, Slapstick of Another Kind. Don't let the involvement of Madeline Kahn weaken your resolve. One viewing will take seven years off your life; just read the book.
