The subject matter is scandalous, but revered indie comic artist Chester Brown challenges whether it should be.

An interesting read on its own, this book is well-accompanied by Brown's earlier personal work such as I Never Liked You and The Playboy which allow you to periscope into the youth of the "john."

Delicately yet frankly handled, Paying For It is an intensely personal story that aspires to impact society's pre-conceptions all the way to its indices' academic arguments and rebuttals!

The best single issue of a comic EVER gets the Clowes Collection treatment (particularly nice since my Eightball 23 went missing in the mid-2000s). Earn wicked indie comic street cred by reading this Salinger cum Spider-man tale!

I don't know about you, but I laughed out loud in several quiet public places while reading Mister Wonderful. All the bile, awkwardness and regret attendant to a Clowes comic are present and woven in to a nice little romance. Collected from the NYT Magazine.

Jeff Smith's saga kept me enthralled between the ages of 12 and 25 (the last volume was released much earlier, but I couldn't quite bring myself to read it for a few years). The immense growth in the both the storyline and the characters mean that readers can start young and the story will mature along with them, but first-time adult readers won't be disappointed either. By the end, Bone encompasses multiple life-or-death struggles, nuanced interpersonal and political debates and a detailed historical mythology, all told with a child-like sense of humor and whimsy.

This graphic adaptation of The Odyssey is not only an extremely accessible introduction to the epic, but it is a masterful imagining of the story.
