Mark Speltz: North of Dixie

Left Bank Books

Left Bank Books presents author and historia Mark Speltz, who will sign and discuss his new book, North of Dixie: Civil Rights Photography Beyond the South.

This event is free and open to the public, but proof of purchase of North of Dixie from Left Bank Books will be required to enter the signing line.

The history of the civil rights movement is commonly illustrated with well-known photographs from Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma—leaving the visual story of the movement outside the South remaining to be told. In North of Dixie, author and historian Mark Speltz shines a light past the most iconic photographs of the era to focus on images of everyday activists who led grassroots campaigns to protest racial discrimination in jobs, housing, education, and police brutality in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis, and Cedar Rapids, and many other cities.

"North of Dixie...helps us understand the ways in which this tragedy can be addressed. This opportunity should not be missed." —Harry Belafonte
