This year's Left Bank Books Angel Tree is collecting books for the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School library in the St. Louis Public School District.
Here is a word from CVPA English Teacher Maggie Schuh:
"When I started teaching at Central Visual & Performing Arts High School, I was surprised and upset to discover there was no school library. The library we shared with Cleveland ROTC had been recently closed, and our students had no easy access to literature. For years, I have been haunted by this fact, and for years, I have brainstormed ways to remedy this situation. In the fall of this year, after much planning and more planning, we have officially opened a school library. Most of the books in there to start were donated by CVPA teachers. But as word spread, we received donations from people in our neighborhood, lovers of the arts, friends and family, even students have graciously brought in books they’ve already read. It has been a community labor of love – one that is already reaping benefits.
"Since debuting the library about a month ago, we have checked out over 400 books to students. I’ve lost count of the number of times kids have come up to me and verbalized some variety of the sentiment: 'I never liked reading before now,' or 'these books are better than the stuff you make us read.' And while I laugh at their newfound appreciation of novels, I truly believe a love of literature leads to lifelong learning."
You can help these student expand their educational resources and gain opportunities to read for fun simply by buying a book for donation today. Below are a list of suggested titles, but any book appropriate for middle or high school reading is welcome. To donate online, simply place your order as usual, select "I would like to pick this order up at the store," and in the order comments, mention that this book is an Angel Tree donation.
